Bona Resident Plus

A Supreme Finish for Domestic Wooden Floors

Bona Resident Plus is a new 1-component waterborne finish for the surface treatment of wooden floors in residential and other areas subject to light wear. Featuring a good balance between performance and commercial aspects, Bona Resident Plus is the competitive choice for securing an excellent Bona floor finish in the home environment.

With lowered VOC and NMP-free formula, Bona Resident Plus reflects Bona's continuous work towards sustainable products. The high viscosity provides a well-bodied surface and makes application easy without affecting its great levelling properties. Bona Resident Plus ensures a non- yellowing surface, enhancing the natural beauty of the wooden floor.

The above text is the standard Bona Resident Plus product introduction.

Bona Resident Plus is a new product which has recently been added to the comprehensive lacquer range from Bona, and only quite recently released here in the UK. Woodfloor-Renovations are delighted to have been asked to undertake a product test and review of Bona Resident Plus and to publish those evaluations on our website.

We recently used Bona Resident Plus on Rustic Oak Parquet wood block floors on one of our domestic projects in Bangor on Dee, which is a few miles away from Wrexham in North Wales.

This was a two room project, a relatively small 10m2 Dining room, and a larger 21m2 Reception room, the block pattern to both area's are classic herringbone with a 2 block border, the project had a small element of block repairs for us to undertake before we could start the Sanding & Sealing part of this project.

After we had completed the parquet block repairs, and properly prepared the surfaces of the two area's, with the Dining room being completed on the first day, and with the larger Reception room being completed on the second day.

The lacquer system, which for this project was 1 x coat of Bona Prime and 2 x coats of Bona Resident Plus which is a very good lacquer specification indeed for a domestic situation.

Bona recommend a waterborne primer coat before using Resident Plus, although Bona also state that Resident Plus can be used WITHOUT a primer coat, basically meaning you can apply 3 coats of this product directly to the wood floor and the first coat will be classed as the priming coat of seal.

Bona Prime was applied as the priming coat for this project, and after the primer coat had dried, in this case in just over an hour, we then moved on to the application of the Bona Resident Plus. After giving the 5 litre can of lacquer [Resident Plus] a good shaking, we then left it for 10 minutes to settle.

Although I hadn't used this newer version of Bona's Resident Plus before, I had used it's predecessor - Bona Resident, which was a pretty good product. However after reading through the specifications of the new Resident Plus I was sure the product would be ok...Well after using this product on two wooden floors over two days I am very pleased to let anyone reading this review know that Bona Resident Plus was quite a lot better than OK !!!

This is a seriously good product, really easy to apply to a properly prepared wooden floor, it has all the properties and characteristics of much more expensive 2 component lacquers.

Using Bona Resident Plus is like all the Bona lacquers I've ever used, easy peasy !! - the product really was lovely to apply, the lacquer was full bodied, had a nice creamy consistency when poured out, sat very nicely on the parquet flooring, and when worked with either the larger roller we used, or our smaller cutting in rollers, the lacquer moved easily and covered the parquet blocks very nicely indeed, the lacquer levelled out beautifully as well leaving no overlap lines or any accumulations of lacquer at all.

For this particular application we used a new 15" medium pile roller [8mm pile length], and for the cutting in a new 4" foam roller was used, when the first coat of Resident Plus had dried, the lacquer had a clear, crisp look to it highlighting and accentuating the beautiful grain structure and multiple natural colours of the Rustic Oak Parquet blocks, both the areas we restored looked genuinely fantastic, the Silkmatt lacquer we used on this project had the right sheen level for this room, our clients were delighted with the look and feel of their 'new' floor.

The drying times for the Bona Resident Plus lacquer system we used was very impressive, well under the approx 2 hours per coat that Bona say is the norm, we applied the 3 coats in just over 3 hours which is pretty good for the application of any water based lacquer system.

In summary Bona Resident Plus is clearly a high quality domestic formulation, designed specifically for area's of lighter wear, I will again have to emphasize how easy this product is to apply with a roller - it genuinely is simplicity itself and really should hold no fears at all for professional end users or the DIY user alike.

Remember to always follow the manufacturers instructions and recommendations for applying their respective products, if you apply Bona Resident Plus as you should, it will not only look superb but leave you with a great looking surface that will give the end user many years of faithful service if properly looked after.

**Note** In demanding domestic environments, further applications/coats of Bona Resident Plus would be recommended.

The coverage that was achieved on this project was excellent, we applied the Resident Plus at the manufacturers recommended rate of 8-10m2 per litre [we got exactly 10m2 per litre overall] the floor area was 31m2 in total and we applied 2 x coats of Resident Plus on top of the primer coat, and used just a fraction over 6 litres of product in all, so we know that the 2 coatings of Bona Resident Plus we applied to the floors were delivered correctly and at the right film coat depth.
